Buddy McGirt is Not Going to Let You Get Punished...

But, unfortunately - he will not help you win a championship fight.

What is it with McGirt lately? I was just watching him give instructions to yet ANOTHER overwhelmed and undertrained fighter of his on national television. Tonight, the victim was Dat Nguyen, who (even though Buddy implored him to double jab) ingnored every single word out of McGirt's mouth.

McGirt: You are saying yes to me, but when you go out there, you do whatever you want. Now double jab and stand southpaw!

Nguyen: Ok, I'll do it.

Nguyen proceeded to walk to the center of the ring, stand orthodox and throw overhand rights.

It's like his charges don't even care what he says anymore.

Look, I respect the man - after all, he was partially responsible for the dismantling of Roy Jones (see Tarver 2 and 3). However, I can't remember the last time one of his guys won a major bout let alone looked good. Christ, even Buddy's OWN SON was stopped on his watch.

Famous Buddy McGirt Quote (almost every fight): I'm gonna stop it baby - you are taking too much punishment".

Just to give you an idea of the carnage that has happened while Buddy shouted instructions:

Gatti slaughtered by Mayweather
Gatti turded by Baldomir
Tarver trounced by Hopkins
Malinaggi destroyed by Hatton (something that should NEVER have happened)
Spinks run over by Bundrage

....and more. Jesus Buddy, take a break before someone gets killed. Seriously.

Khan vs. Judah - Fireworks Shall Ensue

Anyone who thinks that Zab Judah is completely shot should think again. Even a 33 year old Zab is game for a firefight against a top competitor. Khan should provide the fuel for Zab's interest.

One of the problems with Judah in his career is that he has the tendency to take certain styles lightly...and does not prepare for the unexpected. Look at some of his worst losses - Tzsyu, for instance. In that fight, he was so confident that he'd be able to run the table on a supposed one dimensional puncher that he forgot to put his hands up and block what would be a succession of career changing right hands.
The same thing happened against Carlos Baldomir...he thought that he'd won both of those fights with pre-fight intimidation - only to lose badly to lesser fighters (or at least, less gifted).

Zab's best performances were during his defeats against Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto. Even with the tarnished legacy the Mayweather fight left (the unfortunate but severely intentional low blow), Zab showed that he was able to do what few have been able to accomplish against Mayweather - win successive rounds and look good doing it. In the Cotto fight, Zab fought one of his most crowd pleasing fights - and in a TKO loss showed heart that few these days seem to have.

I didn't think much of Amir Khan until after his war with Marcos Maidana. Khan showed that he can last 12 rounds against an earth shattering punch...and although I am not sold on his chin - managed to give back as much as he took.

If Zab has a fight left in him, this is the one. Styles (to me) look to be a great match for an all action fight, though I am concerned about Zab's conditioning. If he is indeed serious about a final run at all of the belts at 147, he needs to make sure every hour in the gym is focused - and that he regains at least some of what made him a superstar in his early 20's.

Prediction: Khan W UD
Hope: Zab KO 10

Rios Destroys Antillion - Williams Decision WORST of 2011 - AND WHERE IS ALFREDO ANGULO?

Most of the time, I enjoy the spoils of being correct in my predictions. Unfortunately, the MD tonight by Paul Williams has made me HATE the world of professional judging in boxing. I can understand a close fight having conflicting viewpoints, but to give Williams a victory after eating what seemed like endless left hands dished out by Erislandy Lara seems like a travesty. The only good thing about this decision is that it makes Devon Alexander's controversial win over Lucas Matthysse seem like a birthday party.

Brandon Rios did what I expected him to do - and that is to UNLEASH Holy Hell on a tough, but grisled Antillion. For a few rounds it seemed like it was going to be Gatti/Ward 4, but in the end, Rios is probably more gifted than either of those warriors. Look for big things from Rios - I would expect a shot against an A fighter before then end of the year. Speaking of that...WHERE IN THE HELL IS ALFREDO ANGULO?

Fight Predictions for Saturday 7/9/11

I expect for the real Paul Williams to show up against Erslandy Lara, though it's going to be a tough fight. Lara has been murdering people, and after that last KO loss against Sergio Martinez, Williams might want to walk with caution before engaging early on. If Paul can stay out of harm's way, he should be able to take Lara into territory he's never been...and out work him. I'll say Williams by UD

Brandon Rios is a beast...and anyone that thinks differently should go back and YouTube his previous fights. Rios KO's Antillion late.

Deandre Latimore vs. Vanes Martirosyan for the IBF #1 Ranking

Rumble Time has announced that Deandre "Bull" Latimore will square off against undefeated prospect Vanes "The Nightmare" Martirosayan for the IBF number one ranking. This is big news for the Bull, who is coming off of 2 wins after losing a title eliminator to Sechew Powell in March 2010. Martirosyan, a Freddie Roach charge - is coming off of a semi-final eliminator against the tough Saul Roman. More to follow as it comes...stay tuned.

Mayweather vs. Ortiz - Random Thoughts

I can't stop thinking about the Mayweather/Ortiz fight that is scheduled. There are only a few names that really get me excited these days, and both of those guys top my list of entertaining and talented fighters. If you are like me, and have come to grips with the fact that Pacquiao and Floyd will eventually meet after they are both out of their primes - then you only have a few places to go to get your fix.
I think Oritz provides the value that the fans deserve. While Pac is fighting guys that either Floyd has already beaten (Marquez, Hatton, Mosley) or B fighters that either come straight forward or 'shell' up (Margarito, Clottey, Cotto)...Floyd has decided to go after a young kid with power in both hands and a very crowd pleasing style.
A year ago, most fans would have snubbed Ortiz as a quitter and a mediocre welterweight with much more to prove than the average contender. After his epic bout with Andre Berto, not a soul can question the heart, power or skill of Victor.
Floyd is going to have his hands full, and it should be one of the better fights we've been offered in recent years. I think Floyd has raised the bar and shown that he is not afraid of taking risks. Anyone who fights Victor Ortiz is taking a major one.

Klitschko vs. Haye - Predictions

Haye is a trash talker, but for some reason I don't hate him for it. He is a very entertaining (if not smallish) heavyweight fighter with serious speed and power. He can most certainly back up his words with his skills and confidence. Wlad is nothing short of a beast. He is Ivan Drago minus the roids and annoying spike wife.
I am expecting an explosive ending in this one regardless of whose arm is raised in the end...though I think that you have to give the edge to the Russian and his 'rock em sock' em robotic Euro-Russian jabfesting style.
The fight is intriguing on several levels...Haye has shown that he can hurt (if you can imagine) an even larger opponent. He staggered Nic Valuev in thier championship bout...which is nothing short of a miracle considering the brow thickness of Valuev matches most images of the cro-magnon human.
Wlad has had a suspect chin in the past, but has seemingly rectified that issue over the past five years...but I still think there is a vulnerability in there if a fearless opponent is willing (and able) to take a huge right hand. I would like to see Haye completely and uncontoversially TURD Wlad because frankly, I think it will be good for the Heavyweight division. the Klit's have dominated to the point that it's getting boring. Maybe if a few of the larger cruisers would step like Haye and Adamek, up we'd be able to talk about the heavies again. Until then, deal with the endless stream of KO's delivered by the Russians. Prediction: Klit UD, Hope: Haye by BRUTAL KO.

Ryan Coyne - Performance vs. Dave McNemar 6/25

Ok, so it was an ugly fight. Doug and I cringed as McNemar used thug tactics to try to get Ryan's guard away from his face, and in some cases it worked. Ryan didn't do enough of his trademark body work, but considering he was in there against a guy leading with his head, one can understand why he wasn't digging as much as he usually does. I'm not taking anything away from Mcnemar, he was a solid and tough opponent who had a decent defense...but did not share the enthusiam that Coyne had for entertaining the fans that came out to see the fight. Ryan clearly won - I had it 117-111, but I can see why the judges had it closer. Looking at the Outlaw's face during the fight didn't help either...Anyway, it is what it is - a win over an undefeated opponent. Hopefully, it's on to bigger and better things. Stay tuned.
